Hainan has worked out a Development Plan for building a clean energy island. The promotion of nuclear power and solar power is expected to guarantee Hainan’s economic and social development.

The second phase of Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant was officially started in March last year, which is the first nuclear power project in China during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. With a total investment of about 37 billion yuan, the Changjiang project is scheduled to be put into operation by the end of 2026.

Yang Yongchao, the Engineer of Huaneng Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. said, “When completed, it can deliver 18 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to Hainan every year, which is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 5.5 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by 13 million tons.”

The Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant is expected to help optimize the energy structure and improve the power supply on the island. Nuclear power is a constant source of power; therefore, when peak demand for electricity consumption is low, the excess electricity will be transferred to its supporting project -- the Qiongzhong Pumped- Storage Power Station. This excess electricity will pump the water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, and the electricity will be converted into potential energy of the water. When additional electricity is needed, the potential energy will be converted back into electricity.

Chen Weitong, the Deputy Director of Maintenance Center of Hainan Storage Power Generation Co. Ltd. noted, “The carbon emission generated in the whole process is relatively low, which makes it a better option to achieve the carbon peak and neutrality goals.”

Qiongzhong Pumped- Storage Power Station is designed to generate 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving 163,100 tons of standard coal consumption for thermal use in the Hainan power system, reducing about 427,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and about 1,400 tons of sulfur dioxide and dust emissions.

Hainan Makes Full Use of Advantages to Rev up Photovoltaic Power Generation

Ample sunshine enables Hainan to develop photovoltaic power generation. In Haikou Jiangnan agro-products wholesale market, workers were laying and wiring photovoltaic panels.

Wang Zhongming, the staff of Hainan Branch of State Power Investment Corporation Limited said, “In response to China’s carbon peak and neutrality goals, we are making full use of idle roofing to install photovoltaic panels for generating solar energy.”

In the Xin 'an Power Station located in Ding 'an county, Hainan province, photovoltaic power has been used in farming.

“Electricity generated from photovoltaic panels reduces carbon emissions every year. The plants underneath grow naturally and do not need fertilizer, so the whole project is pure green,” said Ge Chengjiang, the person in charge of Ding’an Project of Hainan Branch of State Power Investment Corporation Limited.

In recent years, photovoltaic power has been widely used in a number of sectors including agriculture and manufacturing. With the plan in place to build a Clean Energy Island, Hainan has developed multiple sources of clean energy.
