Hainan-registered companies nearly doubled their investments abroad in the first half of 2022, going up 87% year on year in January – June to 2.65 billion yuan (about $394 million at current exchange rate). This was reported by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

Hainan has launched 94 new overseas projects in the past six months, up 113% over the same period in 2021, the commission said. Much of the capital investment in China's southernmost region came from Southeast Asian nations over this period, according to the officials.

Mining and industrial production are among the priority areas Hainan investors are interested in. They account for about 44% and 40% of the capital invested abroad by companies in the province in six months. Transport and logistics, wholesale and retail trade, and information technology follow.

Local authorities noted that the provincial government is actively promoting a favorable climate for enterprises, which play an important strategic role in Hainan's interaction with other countries. Particular attention is paid to establishing efficient and reliable cross-border supply chains.

According to official statistics, in the first half of 2022, the province invested in the economy of 39 states and regions. The British Virgin Islands, Vietnam, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Cayman Islands, and Singapore are among Hainan's key partners.
