Danzhou, Hainan — An immersive cultural journey awaits visitors to “Legendary Dongpo,” the island's first Song Dynasty (960 to 1279)-inspired show about the legendary scholar, poet, and statesman Su Dongpo. This innovative cultural performance, which debuted on December 20, is set in the picturesque Dongpo Cultural Tourism Area and offers an exciting, interactive experience that blends dance, recitation, music, and short plays.

Creating a “Dream Back to the Song Dynasty” experience via a mix of dance, poetry, music, and short plays, visitors step into an academy-themed setting where they assume the role of students engaging directly with “Dongpo.” From interactive poetry sessions to receiving local specialties as rewards, the audience becomes a part of the narrative and is able to connect deeply with the cultural legacy of Su Dongpo.

The highlight is a “graduation party” featuring the “Academies Band,” a modern twist on Song-era charm, with characters playing electric guzhengs and rock pipa in a dazzling fusion of traditional and contemporary performance arts.

Audiences have praised the 80-minute experience for its vibrant storytelling and interactive design. “I earned a graduation certificate from Dongpo himself, and the level of immersion was incredible,” remarked visitor Sun Qihang. “This is the first time I’ve experienced Su Dongpo’s poetry and Danzhou stories in such a vivid way,” said nine-year-old Wan Yiyuan.

The show (performed by skilled actors such as Zhou Liangchen) is now a regular feature at the Danzhou Dongpo Cultural Tourism Zone, promising to enrich the cultural tourism experience and keep the spirit of the Song Dynasty alive.
