Hainan General Hospital is a Grade A general hospital. Its predecessor is the mission hospital —— Haikou Gospel Hospital, founded in 1881 by an American priest. The hospital has 15 medical centers, 74 clinical and technical departments and 23 laboratories.

The hospital has a full range of disciplines, including cardiovascular medicine, neurosurgery, critical care medicine, general surgery, medical imaging and clinical nursing, pediatrics, neurology, emergency medicine and hematology.

The hospital is the medical education and scientific research base of Hainan province, including the national pharmaceutical clinical research institution, tumor prevention and treatment center, clinical testing center, acute poisoning consultation center, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation center, and asthma allergy disease prevention and treatment center. Six national key clinical specialties in the hospital involves cardiovascular medicine, neurosurgery, critical care medicine, general surgery, medical imaging and clinical nursing. In 2018, it was selected as one of the first pilot hospitals for multidisciplinary oncology diagnosis and treatment in China.

As the research and treatment center focusing on difficult and critical diseases in Hainan province, the hospital has made outstanding achievements in advanced diagnosis and treatment techniques such as endoscopic surgery, minimally invasive technique, liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, organ resuscitation, critical care, tumor intervention, and vascular intervention.
