As the world becomes increasingly fragmented, the Boao Forum for Asia plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue and cooperation. During this year's forum, the Hainan International Media Center (HIMC) interviewed Arancha González Laya (former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs). She shared her insights on how Hainan can leverage globalization, attract European businesses and tourists, and draw inspiration from Spain’s successes in economic development.

González highlighted Hainan’s logistical and geographical advantages, emphasizing that—despite its small size—the island has a wealth of talent and the potential to position itself strategically in the 21st century. Drawing from Spain’s tourism industry, she stressed the importance of defining a clear value proposition: Hainan should market itself as a destination offering pristine nature, a strong commitment to sustainability, and a premium shopping experience.

Discussing Hainan’s special customs policies, she outlined three key factors for success: efficiency, cost reduction, and innovation. With streamlined trade policies, a low-cost business environment, and a focus on technological innovation, Hainan is shaping itself as a competitive global hub.

She also pointed to Spain’s use of language, sports, and gastronomy to build global influence, suggesting that Hainan could adopt a similar approach to enhance its cultural soft power. Encouraging young people to pursue their dreams, she urged them to seize opportunities and actively participate in Hainan’s growing Free Trade Port economy.

With its open policies, global mindset, and innovation-driven development, Hainan is poised to become a premier investment and tourism destination. As it deepens reforms and strengthens its competitive edge, the island will continue to shine on the world stage.
