A Siemens Energy Hainan Gas Turbine Assembly and Service Center is under construction in southern China's Yangpu, Hainan Province. The project reflects deeper cooperation between Hainan and Siemens in multiple industries, including green energy, since collaboration began three decades ago. Zheng Songwu has the details.
In 1995, two sets of Siemens V94.2 gas turbines were installed in a power generation company in Hainan's Yangpu, Southern China. As of November, 2025, the two turbines have generated a total of 28.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and then were retired.
HU CHENG, Chief Engineer, CNOOC Hainan Power Generation Company "Siemens follows strict German standards for assembly and quality. So, having our skilled people train here will not only improve their expertise but also help upgrade local manufacturing as a whole."
Since Hainan launched the special customs operations, the cooperation between Yangpu and Siemens Energy has deepened. A Siemens Energy Green Energy Industry Innovation Research Centre, focusing on the R&D, application and commercialisation of green, low-carbon energy solutions, is set to begin full operations this year.
ZHENG SONGWU, CGTN Reporter "What are the main draws for international companies like Siemens under Hainan's special customs operations?"
LI RUI, Deputy General Manager, Energy Development Department, Yangpu International Investment Consulting Company "Specifically, because Yangpu is actually the heart of Hainan's industrial zones, it covers the main core petrochemical or advanced manufacturing, so we have very comprehensive industrial facilities, auxiliaries, and everything is prepared. So they think this place is the best-equipped place in the whole Hainan Free Trade Port."
Construction is underway in Yangpu on Siemens Energy's second global gas turbine assembly base. It is scheduled to begin full operations in 2027, handling turbine assembly and offering full-life-cycle services like upgrades and maintenance.
JOERN SCHMUECKER, Senior Vice President, Gas Services Central, Siemens Energy "With our partners, we want to drive innovation across the value chain and we want to enhance capabilities around the equipment, the manufacturing, but also around service and on top of course, we can enhance project execution capabilities, and all that together should enable us to build an ecosystem here in Hainan."
Thirty years of Siemens in Yangpu tells a story of evolving China-Germany cooperation, reflecting a shared vision for green energy. Zheng Songwu, CGTN, Yangpu, Hainan Province.
