Container cargo turnover of Yangpu port in Hainan in January - April this year exceeded 500 thousand TEU (standard 20-foot equivalent unit), up 47.9% over the same period in 2021, China Central Television reported.

Container cargo turnover for last month increased by 11.7% in annual terms, to 106.9 thousand TEU. By the end of the first quarter, the port's total number of shipping routes reached 39. Of these, 18 are international routes, and the rest are domestic. They mainly cover coastal cities in China itself, as well as major ports in Southeast Asia.

In 2021, Yangpu Port's total container cargo turnover was 1.3 million TEUs, an increase of 29.33% compared to 2020. Last year, it ranked first among Chinese ports with a container turnover of more than 1 million TEU.

Hainan authorities focus on building the infrastructure of Yangpu Port to increase both domestic and overseas cargo traffic, which is an important part of the province's free trade port project. Work is underway to prepare Yangpu Port to meet the requirements for future cargo traffic of about 10 million TEU annually.

Chinese authorities intend to turn Yangpu Port in the northwestern part of the Hainan Island into a key point for distributing the flow of goods from various regions of the PRC to Southeast Asia and Oceania, Europe and North America by 2035. Yangpu Port will play an important role in the implementation of the plan to form a new integrated sea and land corridor, a project of the National Development and Reform Commission of the People's Republic of China, aimed at accelerating and improving the efficiency of regional and global trade and economic projects and providing advanced customs and logistics services.

It should become a regional transportation hub by 2025. Up to 5 million containers per year are expected to be transported through the port.
