As the world's largest free trade port, China's only international tourism consumer center, China's largest special economic zone, and an international tourism island, Hainan is the strategic hub of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road as well as a beautiful, romantic international travel and vacation destination.
Hainan welcomed over 90 million domestic and international travelers in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 49.9%. During the 2024 Spring Festival holiday, the province received 9.5145 visits and achieved total travel industry revenues of 15.127 billion yuan ($2.1 billion), both new record highs.

Hainan now has 47 overseas routes, 13 yacht marinas, and more than 2,300 yacht berths, and travelers can circle the island in just three hours by high-speed rail. The newly opened Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway meanders a total distance of 988 kilometers, taking road-trippers through 12 coastal cities and counties and alongside 31 national A-level scenic attractions,  linking coastal vacation destinations, sports venues, health & wellness facilities, educational and research institutes, and other travel locations.

At the event, Hainan’s visa-free entry policy garnered quite a bit of interest. As of Feb. 9, 2024, Hainan’s visa-free entry policy for citizens of 59 countries including France, Russia, the UK, and Germany was expanded to allow entry and stays of up to 30 days for purposes including business, visits, family reunions, medical treatment, exhibitions, sports competitions, and more.

French attendees enthusiastically offered ideas for Hainan to bring in more travelers from France. Marie-Pierre Boucher-Hollier, special advisor to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), suggested strengthening direct communication between Hainan and the international travel industry to jointly design and develop travel routes, use the internet to provide up-to-date, accurate information to travel industry professionals, media, and travelers, and improve the attractiveness of Hainan’s travel websites.

French artist Rémy Aron, who has visited China on multiple occasions, remarked that 2024 brings the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China, and that the two countries can jointly make even greater contributions to 21st century civilization. He believes that thanks to the province’s many advantages, the Hainan Free Trade Port will develop into a world-class travel destination and a place where different arts from around the world can meet and spark new ideas, as well as a place that’s fast becoming an emerging world cultural center.
