After departing Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia, a plane loaded with duty-free products landed at Haikou's Meilan International Airport in the early hours of July 8. After stopping in Hainan, the plane flew on to Milan's Malpensa Airport in Italy, marking the official opening of the Tbilisi - Haikou - Milan cargo route. This is the fourth '5th freedom of the air' cargo route to open in Haikou this year.
The Tbilisi - Haikou - Milan cargo route is operated by Georgian Airways every Tuesday and Sunday. Inbound flights mainly carry duty-free products from Europe, while outbound flights generally transport cross-border e-commerce packages from China.
The opening of this new route not only provides a close air-cargo connection between China, Italy, and Georgia, making economic and trade cooperation between the three places more convenient, but also broadens the foreign trade avenues of the Hainan FTP, better meeting the province’s long-distance, intercontinental, high-efficiency logistics requirements.
The 'Fifth Freedom of the Air' refers to the right or privilege, in respect of scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to put down and to take on, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from or destined to a third State. 'Fifth Freedom of the Air' rights are hailed by the aviation industry as the most generous and economically significant freedom rights, and are an important symbol of the level of opening up and business environment of a region.
Currently, Meilan International Airport boasts six international cargo routes, including Tbilisi - Haikou - Milan, Haikou - Paris - Bournemouth, Haikou - Vienna - Bournemouth, Haikou ⇌Bournemouth, Incheon ⇌Haikou ⇌Singapore, and Haikou ⇌Paris, of which four are '5th freedom' cargo routes. As of June 30, 2024, Meilan Airport had transported a total of 9,415 tons of international cargo and mail, a year-on-year increase of 181%.
