Hainan Island is one of the regions with the most rainfall in the same latitude in the world. The water vapor source is abundant, the total amount of precipitation is large, and the spatial and temporal distribution is uneven.

The average annual rainfall is about 1640mm. The annual precipitation is distributed in a ring shape, with more in the east than in the west, more in the mountains than in the plains, and most in the southeast slopes. The rainy area in the east is about 2000-2400mm, and the annual average of the rainy center in the middle reaches 2440mm. The rainy area in the west is only about 1,000mm (922mm in Dongfang City).

The dry and wet seasons are distinct in Hainan Island. The rainy season generally occurs from May to October, and the dry season is from November to April of the following year. Rainy season accounts for about 80% of annual rainfall.

In most areas, the annual precipitation day exceeds 100 days, the least in Dongfang City is 87 days, and the highest in Qiongzhong is 194 days. The rainy days in each month are about 12-22 days, and the dry season is less than 10 days.

  • GenreralHainan Island has a tropical monsoon marine climate. The basic characteristics are: no extreme heat in summer, no severe cold in winter, small annual temperature difference, and high average annual temperature.
