Hainan Consumer Expo Showcases Green, Low-Carbon Concept

At the third China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE) in Hainan, green, low-carbon and sustainable development has become the common goal of all exhibitors and enterprises.

This year, all expo venues are powered by clean electricity, according to the Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment. The organizing committee of the expo has achieved the goal of carbon neutrality for the first time through green electricity consumption and blue carbon offset, following the recent carbon inclusion regulations issued by the local authorities.

Hainan has launched a carbon inclusion mechanism to encourage individuals, communities, institutions and companies to join in green and low-carbon development. Organizers of large-scale events are encouraged to purchase carbon credits for reduction in emissions in order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

The mangrove ecosystem in Xiaohai, Wanning, a city on the east coast of Hainan, is under restoration and protection. It is part of the carbon inclusion mechanism to offset emissions during the expo. This is the province’s first approved carbon inclusion project.

Green and low-carbon products can be found in many exhibition areas of the third CICPE. TMall Global, China’s leading import retail platform, has set up an “Earth Friendly Area.” About 80 products from the total 35 overseas brands they have brought to the expo use recycled packaging.

At the exhibition hall of Chinese jewelry brand Gaonas, an installation  created from blue and white porcelain fragments and a piece of artwork made from marine waste from the South Pole are on display.

KPMG China’s exhibition area is environment, society and governance (ESG)-themed. “As the ESG framework receives increasing attention, green consumption is getting incorporated in many aspects of people’s daily life,” said Zhang Lanlan, partner in-charge of KPMG China’s Hainan business.

As China aims to achieve peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, people from all walks of life in the country are exploring sustainable development paths suitable for them, Zhang added.

Dell Technologies has also announced their ESG targets. All their products will use recycled packaging materials. Besides, more than half of the raw materials for their products will come from recycled or renewable materials, said Wang Weijia, Global Vice President of the group.
